“Wind” (viento) you will know. Here the focus is on some idioms that use the word. Examine these:
- Mr. Sanchez is waiting to see which way the wind is blowing.
Here he is waiting to see how events or opinions change before making a decision. Perhaps in Spanish a similar expression is “…esperando para ver por dónde van los tiros”. We can also ask: which way is the wind blowing? Here it is a matter of weather, so the context is important to understand the meaning.
- There is something brewing in the wind.
Here we have a feeling that something is going to happen, but we are not sure about it. “Algo se está cociendo” is a similar expression. “Something is cooking” is similar to “something brewing in the wind”.
- Alejandro has got wind of something.
If Alejandro has “got wind of something” he has learnt about something that was perhaps secret, being planned, or something confidential. Perhaps in Spanish you might say “Alejandro se ha enterado de algo”.
- Mr. Rivera wants to take the wind out of Mr. Sanchez´s sails.
Here the idea is that Mr. Rivera wants to stop the progress or momentum that Mr. Sanchez is experiencing. Mr. Rivera wants to “corta las alas al Señor Sanchez».
We also have an expression “the winds of change” (los aires de cambio). An example: are the winds of change coming to North Korea? There is certainly something “brewing in the wind”.
