“About” is a preposition and an adverb.
Here are some examples as a preposition:
- Pedro Sanchez has written a book about gardening (Pedro Sanchez ha escrito un libro de jardinería /un libro sobre la jardinería).
- I am phoning about the meeting with Mr. Rajoy tomorrow (estoy llamando por la reunión mañana con el Señor Rajoy).
- What is that book about (de qué trata ese libro)?
- I would like to talk to you about the election in December (quisiera hablar contigo sobre las elecciones en diciembre).
- Zapatero and Mr. Solbes fell out about money (… riñeron por cuestión de dinero).
- I have been doing jobs about the house (he estado haciendo arreglos en la casa).
Now as an adverb:
- It was about six o´ clock when ZP went to his English class in Las Arenas (eran alrededor de las seis/sobre las seis cuando ZP fue a la clase de ingles en Las Arenas).
- The Porsche costs about 200 euros ( … unas 200 libras/alrededor 200 libras/200 libras más o menos/cuesta aproximadamente 200 libras).
- Is Alejandro about (está por aquí Alejandro)?
- There was nobody about (no había nadie).
“About” is also part of a phrasal verb as in “bring about” (provocar), and “wander about” (deambular). These phrasal verbs will be covered (abarcado) in another blog.
