¿Data – singular or plural?

“Data” is plural meaning lots of information. It is often used incorrectly. The word comes from Latin where the plural froms of a word often end in “a”.

The singular is datum (dato). Examine these:

The datum suggests that Mr. Trump will lose the election. This means “a single piece of information” suggests that he will lose the election.

The data suggests that Mr Trump will lose the election. The data here could be opinion polls, the results of a survey: multiple types of information.
